Turgut Özben learns from the newspaper that his close friend, a young engineer, Selim Işık, killed himself with a gun. As he was so affected by the event, he wonders why his friend committed suicide and begins to investigate. He meets Metin and Esat, who are Selim's friends. Metin tells him the following: he is in a relationship with a girl named Zeliha, but Selim says that the girl is not suitable for him and that he broke up with the girl, and then when he realized that Selim liked the girl, he became close to the girl again, and that he broke up with both of the girls and married someone else.

Esat also says the following about Selim: He knows Selim in high school, he is intelligent, interesting and likes to play games.

Turgut Özben later finds Selim's friends Kargı and Süleyman. Süleyman gives him a poem written by Selim. According to what he tells in the poem, Selim is the only and Turkish, he said that he was a person who was thought to be emotional, impatient, ruthless, negative and lifeless in his life.

Turgut Özben later meets a girl named Günseli, who is in a relationship with Selim. Günseli, on the other hand, said the following about Selim: That they came across with Selim on a public tour, that he was troubled and sullen, that Selim tried to console him and that he showered him with questions and that they could not agree that day because he was bored with this situation. After a while, Selim called him and wanted to meet, He says that their relationship is progressing day by day, but Selim does not look forward to marriage, he suspects too much, he does not trust the future, he does not believe in the future, he does not like the family order, he is unconnected, he lost himself and drank too much, so he became incompatible with the environment and said that he felt like he was locked in a cage.

Selim gets sick and starts to think, because of the fear of living badly, he thinks that he has never lived, and writes a letter to Günseli and commits suicide.

Selim started working to prepare an encyclopedia on those who could not hold on in his last days, and he reserved an article for himself in this encyclopedia. He had a very serious illness in his childhood and left the town they lived in and moved to a big city. He mentions that the World War II started, so he went to the army, met his friend Kargı while he was in the army, was sincere, that he was in the middle when he finished his military service, that no one took care of him, that's why he retreated into his own shell.

While investigating Selim's suicide, Turgut Özben recognizes himself, and he is one of those who can't hold on that Selim mentioned. He feels that some people have ruled him in his previous life.

Note: Since the book is heavy and contains too many Ottoman words and sentences, this is the summary.
